What is Shakuhachi?
You may be unfamiliar with the musical instrument itself, but you must have heard the sound of it in many occasions such as the opening music of the mobile game Onmyoji, the opening song of Kuroko’s Basketball, the background music of the Japanese TV series Oku.

The Shakuhachiis an end-blown flute. The name means “1.8 shaku” which is roughly 54.54 cm, referring to its size.An extremely versatile instrument, Shakuhachi can produce virtually any pitch. The instrument specializes in conveying a feeling of tranquility and peacefulness.

The Shakuhachi, evolved from flutes during the Han Dynasty, originated from China. It was brought to Japan during the Tang Dynasty together with Buddhism.

The Shakuhachi practiced in Japan nowadays was brought by Japanese monks from Hangzhou in the Southern Song Dynasty.

The Shakuhachi has gradually disappeared in China after that. Well-preserved in Japan, the Shakuhachi was brought back to China by Japanese performers near the end of the 20th century. Nowadays, there are fewer than 1,000 Shakuhachi learners in China.
